The first thing you recognize when you meet Shanta Prince is that she’s petite and carries a beautiful smile. But don’t let the diminutive stature fool you; this lady is a powerhouse on stage with her unique vocal sound. Her love of music is well known as she belts out tunes at any given opportunity.
Whether it’s soca, pop or reggae, you can find it in her repertoire or on her iPod. Musical greats such as Michael Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, Beyonce and Alicia Keys have inspired her choice of career while regional soca superstars Alison Hinds and Destra Garcia can be credited for influencing her craft.
Shanta’s musical journey began as a student at Queens College where she danced and sang in various recitals and pageants. She’s performed background vocals with Bacchanal Time Calypso Tent and worked behind the scenes with talented artistes such as Rupee and Biggie Irie. Her first two solo releases, “Island Girl” and “Blind to See” brought her centre stage where she knew she was meant to be. And she’s never looked back. Shanta earned the Breakthrough Artist title for the 2014 Crop Over hit Stush – her first Barbados Music Award. But we know it won’t be her last award and TBFT will watch eagerly as her star continues to rise.
Her next Show will be Stage Antigua June 13, 2015
In this blog I wanted to showcase artistes who live in Barbados. Anyone with a creative bent who is courageous enough to share their ‘art’ with the world. It could be writer, musician, photographer, sculptor or artist. It matters not whether they are using their art to currently make their living. Some of us are not that fortunate. I think however that creativity needs to be celebrated nevertheless.
Q1 Do you write your own songs?
Yes, I write for myself sometimes but I use other writers as well.
Q2 Who are your musical mentors?
That would be Michael Jackson. I remember seeing a video of him in concert and just feeling every word he sang and (seeing) the way he was on stage and thinking, that is what I want to do! I also watched Alison Hinds, Destra, Edwin Yearwood
Q3 Do you get butterflies before you perform? How do you cope?
Sometimes not often, but I try to block it out and focus on what I have to do onstage.
Q4 Favourite song to perform?
Favourite song right now would be Stush…lol

Right now I’m listening to Sia, Sam Smith, Nicki Minaj, Dej Loaf
